Larose Gossette, 89

Larose B. Gossette, 89, of New Bremen, died at 4:45 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center.
She was born on April 19, 1922, near New Bremen, the daughter of Bertha (Poppe) and Dicke.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Gossette of Reno, Nev., David (Alice) Gossette of New Bremen; and two daughters, Ann (Bernd) Graf of San Jose, Calif., and Susan (Thomas) Rengers of New Bremen.
Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen, the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.

Thomas Lee, 70

June 1, 2011

Thomas R. Lee, 70, of Lima, died at 4:40 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, in Triumph Hospital, Lima.
He was born Dec. 12, 1940, in Lima, the son of Henrietta (Clement) and Harry D. Lee.
Survivors are a son, Darwin Thomas (Jane Ann) Lee, of Lima; and a daughter Christina S. Rinderle, of Cincinnati.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home in Cridersville.

Night of awards

More than one-third of the graduating class of 216 was recognized with a little more than $2 million in financial awards or other honors in front of a packed house at the Wapakoneta Performing Arts Center Tuesday.
“We thought this was an exceptional class,” Wapakoneta High School Principal Aaron Rex said. “We really pushed kids to apply for scholarships this year. The parents and our guidance counselors deserve a lot of the credit — and the students should be proud of their hard work in the class and at home. The students will be able to come out of college without as much debt.”

Anna L. Huffer, 85

June 1, 2011

Anna Lee Huffer, 85, of Lima, died at 4:55 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, at Lost Creek Care Center in Lima.
She was born Oct. 7, 1925, the daughter of Edith L. (Pierson) and John M. McGraw.
She married Byron W. Huffer, who died in June of 1982.
Surviving is a son, Anthony “Tony” (Shelley) Huffer, of Waynesfield.
Services are at 1 p.m. today at Walnut Hill Cemetery in New Hampshire, with the Rev. Doneta Warren officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by Armentrout Funeral Home in Waynesfield.

OSHP reports no fatals during holiday

Troopers with the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol handled no crashes involving injuries or fatalities during the Memorial Day weekend.
Lt. Scott Carrico, commander of the local post, described it as a “nice, quiet weekend.”
He said troopers handled just five property damage crashes.
They made contact with 763 motorists and issued 395 citations and 281 warnings.

Niles Smith, 83

Niles D. “Bud” Smith, 83, of Cridersville, died at 6:24 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Otterbein-Cridersville Skilled Care Facility.
He was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Cridersville, the son of Wanda (Spyker) and Benjamin Smith. Both parents are deceased. On January 30, 1948, he married Betty Joan Miller, who died July 16, 2006.

Rain dampens BFA attendance

The 22nd annual Buckeye Farm Antiques (BFA) Show went on without a hitch despite periods of inclement weather, one of the organizer’s says.
“We had a big rain on Thursday and Saturday,” BFA Advertising Director Esther Gaier said. “So attendance was down a bit because of that, but we had good attendance on Saturday and Sunday. We had attendance of about 5,000 the four days.”
Due to the weather, the tractor and truck pulls, which typically bring in large crowds, had to be cancelled, along with the garden tractor show.

Jason Strauser, 17

Jason Dean Strauser, 17, of Wapakoneta, died at 6:33 a.m. May 30, 2011, at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus.
He was born Jan. 17, 1994, in Lima, the son of Judy (Treadway) and Rick Strauser who both survive in Wapakoneta.
