A wholesale power supplier and services provider recently honored Wapakoneta administrators and city Electric Department employees for their work during the past year.
Wapakoneta Mayor Rodney Metz shared American Municipal Power Inc.’s enthusiasm for city employees work on replacing lines throughout the system and installing new substations.
C. Donald Douglas, 68, of Wapakoneta, died at 1 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at his son’s home in Wapakoneta.
He was born April 27, 1943, in Long Hollow, W. Va., the son of Hattie May (Thornton) and Miner Cecil Douglas, who preceded him in death. On April 20, 1969, he married Nelia Lou Hudnall, and she died July 30, 2008.
Garet O. Schmehl, 20, 17906 State Route 66, St. Marys, died at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, from injuries received in an automobile accident that occurred Nov. 7, 2011.
He was born Aug. 29, 1991, in St. Marys, the son of Renee (Craft) and Tony Schmehl, who survive.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Monticello United Brethren Church in Spencerville, with the Rev. Andrew Atkins officiating. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.
Margaret Ritter, 70, of 212 E. Front St., New Bremen, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at her home.
She was born on Feb. 26, 1941, in Wellington, New Zealand. She was the daughter of Dennis and Johannah Horgan, both of whom preceded her in death.
On Nov. 12, 1965, she married William Ritter, who survives in New Bremen.
Also surviving are her children, Shaun Ritter, of New Bremen; Mark Ritter, of New Bremen; Michael Ritter of Germantown, Tenn.; Tony Ritter, of New Bremen; and Greg Ritter, of Delaware.
These men and women have served their country, but they often find it difficult to find work in the country they defended.
Staring at a 22 percent unemployment rate for veterans between the ages of 18 and 24, Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown called for swift passage Thursday of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011. The provision would be a component of the American Jobs Act passed by Congress with a Senate vote Thursday.

Veterans of World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War and the wars from Afghanistan and Iraq walked under the red, white and blue American flags they vowed to protect and the people who call America home.
The veterans of war and peace time paraded down the hallway into the gymnasium to be honored by Wapakoneta Middle School students during their annual Veterans Day ceremony.
A second generation physician serving Wapakoneta struggled to find the words to describe the way he felt when he and his wife, also a physician, received the honor as the top citizens of the year.
“I was really surprised,” the man said. “It certainly wasn’t anything that was expected.”
These were Dr. George Herman’s first words when asked about the award at the conclusion the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2011 Annual Meeting & Community Banquet Awards at the Grandview Plaza.
Dr Herman and his wife, Dr. Parmie Herman, were named 2011 Citizens of the Year during the banquet.

Vogel, a St. Marys native and a world-class competitive practical shooter and gun expert, notices things like that.
