Mary Pfenning, 79

November 14, 2011

Mary Jo Pfenning, 79, 241 N. Spruce St., St. Marys, died at 8:49 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, in the emergency department of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital Hospital in St. Marys following a sudden illness.
She was born April 22, 1932, in St. Marys, the daughter of Erma (Sprague) and William Suchland. On Oct. 2, 1952, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Marys, she married J. Philip Pfenning, who died Dec. 11, 2007.

Building block kids: A bridge toward a construction career

Approximately 25 children gathered Saturday morning into the Wapakoneta Elementary School cafeteria to construct with Legos any type of structure they wanted.
Appropriately, the overall winning entry was a bridge designed by Jacob Schreiner as the competition is designed to introduce and build a bridge between children and the construction industry. The competition was organized by members of the Lima Ohio Area Chapter 374 of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).

Applications being taken for Shop with Cop

Families in need of assistance this holiday season are being asked to submit their information as soon as possible to the local “Shop with a Cop” program.
“We try to find those who are in most need and work with the other organizations so as not to duplicate services but to help as many as we can,” said Jerry Sawmiller, who serves as chair for the annual holiday assistance program.
Sawmiller is a detective sergeant with the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office.

FOOTBALL: Schwartz named league's best lineman

Wapakoneta Redskins senior right guard Chris Schwartz was named the Offensive Lineman of the Year when the All-Western Buckeye League football teams were released on Friday.

Schwartz, who will attend the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY in the fall, earned the honor in a vote by the WBL coaches.

He was a key cog in an offense that led the league in rushing yards with 3,073 yards on the ground in the regular season.

SOCCER: Faller named all-state, all-district

Wapakoneta Redskins senior Andy Faller is adding to his growing list of honors.

After being named the Western Buckeye League boys soccer Player of the Year, Faller was selected Division II Second-Team All-State by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association and First-Team All-District by the Northwest Ohio Soccer Coaches Association on Friday.

Faller was the first Wapakoneta boys soccer player to ever be named the WBL Player of the Year.

Defiance Bulldogs’ Doug Herrett was voted the district Player of the Year. The Coach of the Year was Bath Wildcats’ Jeremy Winegardner.

Elementary student is fluent in two languages

A Wapakoneta Elementary School student is a typical third-grader — she loves to read, draw and play.
But Mayra Aguirre can do one thing that is atypical — she is bilingual. She is fluent in English and Spanish.
“My mom and dad know Spanish and lived in Mexico, but I grew up here,” Mayra said. “I grew up my whole life here so I know English. My mom does not know a lot of English but she is learning more and more.”

Mary Jo Pfenning, of St. Marys, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, in the Emergency Department at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
Friends may call from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Long & Folk Funeral Home in St. Marys.
Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

James Sturgill, 73

James Kenneth “Kenny” Sturgill, 73, of Harrod, died at 6:13 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born Feb. 22, 1938, in Powell River, Va., the son of Lona Caudill and James Hobart Sturgill. On July 5, 1964, he married Marlene Owsley, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, James “Keith” Sturgill, of Lima, Shawn Sturgill, of McConnelsville, and Jason Sturgill, of Harrod; and a daughter, Sherry Beidelschies, of Harrod.

Mary Ramsey, 99

Mary Margaret Ramsey, 99, 423 Huffman Street, St. Marys, died at 11:56 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center, where she had made her home for the past two years.
She was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Auglaize County, the daughter of Clara (Rohrbach) and Charles F. Teeters. On April 24, 1935, she married Walter “Pete” Ramsey and he preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1977.
She is survived by two daughters, Joan Paul, of New Bremen, and Mary Holtzapple, of St. Marys; and a son, Walter Ramsey Jr., of Belleville.
