GIRLS SOCCER: Wapak ties first-place Shawnee

It wasn’t a win. But in a lot of ways it felt like it for the Wapakoneta Redskins.
Wapak held off a furious assault from first-place Shawnee to force a 1-1 tie in a varsity girls soccer match Tuesday at Ryan Field and placed the first blemish on the Indians’ previously perfect Western Buckeye League record.

Wapak girl, Botkins teen crowned

A Wapakoneta girl and a Botkins teen were crowned winners during the Miss West Central Ohio Outstanding Teen and Little Miss Scholarship Program last weekend.
Ali Wayman, 11, of Wapakoneta, was named Little Miss West Central Ohio, and Shelby Boyd, 16, of Botkins, was named Miss West Central Ohio’s Outstanding Teen. Matti Lynn Chrisman, 16, of Nashport, was named Miss Crystal Lake’s Outstanding Teen.
Boyd’s platform was preventing childhood obesity while Chrisman’s was “don’t text and drive.”

National walk to remember

Walking is a great way to get exercise and have fun as well as a great way to get from one place to another, an organizer of a National Walk to School Day event says, but it needs to be done safely.
Wapakoneta City School District administrators and city of Wapakoneta administrators along with members of the community organized a local event for next week to coincide with Monday’s National Walk to School Day.

Botkins staff’s close shave

BOTKINS — Botkins High School Principal Jeff McPheron is finding out the hard way that maybe he will not underestimate the student body again.
The students had never managed to raise more than $1,660 in any given year for its annual drive to raise money for the Shelby County United Way, so McPheron naturally felt safe with this year’s event.
Annually, the school’s Student Council members come up with a unique approach to raising the money. This year, vocational agriculture teacher Chad Berning agreed to let students shave his head if $1,800 was raised.
