LEPC considers changes
By KAREN CAMPBELL
Assistant Managing Editor
Members of the Local Emergency Planning Committee are considering performing more inspections each year on buildings housing hazardous materials.
During a regular meeting of the committee Wednesday, member Don Jump said he was concerned about how few inspections were done each year.
Emergency Management Agency Director Troy Anderson said after the meeting that they are doing the seven inspections required by the state, which helps funds the inspections, each year and making it in to every building with extremely hazardous materials within the recommended five-year window unless there are reported changes and they need to go sooner.
“I’m still troubled by the number of inspections getting done,” Jump said. “Why can’t more of these get done if we have the funds out there? If we have to fund them out of our own funds, so be it. We need to have a handle with where we are at with these facilities.
“I know we are all busy with things to do, but the way the times are and how things have changed it seems to me like we aren’t doing enough,” Jump said.

For Cindy Walkup, the atmosphere surrounding the St. Joseph Fourth of July Festival hasn’t changed since she was a child.
Now the Catholic church’s administrative assistant, Walkup said the event still draws the same emotions every year when she sets foot in the Auglaize County Fairgrounds.
“Things have gotten bigger and better, but the feeling, the camaraderie and that sense of homecoming that I had when I was young, I still get,” Walkup said. “It’s something that always brings people back to town.”
On Friday and Saturday, residents from across the area will converge on the fairgrounds for the festival’s 59th year, enjoying games, prizes and the standard at any reputable July 4th event — the fireworks.
“The fireworks here are some of the best,” Walkup said, “and that’s because of the generosity of the businesses around here.”

Ohio to ramp up attraction to businesses
Thursday, 02 July 2009
By WILLIAM LANEY
Managing Editor
Organizers of a new state-wide group, which is still in its formative stages, aim to sharpen the state’s efforts to attract companies to Ohio — and a Wapakoneta business leader has been asked to help.
Wapakoneta Area Economic Development Council (WAEDC) Executive Director Greg Myers said he has been asked to serve as a board member with Ohio Sales Partnership, which is replacing Team Ohio.
The Ohio Sales Partnership is altering its primary objectives, Myers said.
“The idea is to focus more on aggressively pursuing high probability prospects rather than using the old-fashioned shotgun approach to sell Ohio,” Myers told the Wapakoneta Daily News. “Our efforts as the Ohio Sales Partnership will be focused on identifying those companies that are looking at projects and are considering Ohio as a possible location.”
