Honoring state heroes
Vietnam-era refugees, veterans to be recognized by bill

Staff Writer
A bill passed by the Ohio General Assembly and awaiting signature by the governor would pay homage to those who fought for the freedom of Vietnam.
Once signed by Gov. Ted Strickland, April 29 of each year would be designated as “Heritage and Freedom Flag of the Former Republic of Vietnam Day.”

Grant purchases laptops for FD vehicles

Fire department and rescue squad personnel throughout Auglaize County should soon have one more tool to help them respond faster to emergencies.
Fifteen Panasonic Toughbooks, proven through tests to be the most rugged wireless laptops in the industry, are expected to be placed in lead vehicles for fire and emergency medical responders throughout the county in paid and volunteer departments.
A 2007 federal Homeland Security Grant is paying the $47,000 to purchase the computers onboard fire trucks and rescue squads.

Wapakoneta City Schools educators Wednesday honored three teachers and a late business owner for their decades of service to the students of the district.
Wapakoneta High School special education teacher Janet Clark, industrial technologies teacher Del Elsner, and Northridge Elementary teacher Pat Shaw were honored at this year’s Wapakoneta Education Association’s Retired Teachers’ Tea at the Wapakoneta High School Commons.
Dozens of friends, family and colleagues turned out to show their support for the teaching threesome, which were awarded with roses, certificate, restaurant gift cards and $25 in cash. The ceremony was put on by the Centennial Elementary Tea Committee.

Borges agrees to tee off for Capital

Make it a perfect 2-for-2 for the Wapakoneta varsity girls golf team.
Just two years ago, Wapakoneta High School decided to add a varsity girls golf program to its athletic department and the decision has paid off tremendously as for the second year in a row, a Redskin has been given the opportunity to play golf while pursuing a college education.
Last season, Rachel Cox became the first Wapakoneta female golfer in the program’s history to sign with a college as she agreed to play golf for the University of Northwestern Ohio.
This season Redskin senior Becca Borges equaled Cox’s feat by agreeing to take her golfing talents to the campus of Capital University.
“We are now 2-for-2 which is pretty good for a program only two years old,” Wapakoneta varsity coach and professional golfer Dawn West said.
Capital wasn’t the only school courting Borges. The college athlete to be said she strongly considered playing for Muskingum College and that Ohio Northern University was also an option.
In the end, however, Capital won over Borges’ heart.
“I liked the area, and I liked the size of the school,” she said. “It’s not too small and it’s not too big.”
